Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Precision Diagnosis & Image-Guided Treatment
Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective orthopaedic care.
Dr. Ohlson uses in-office musculoskeletal ultrasound to evaluate injuries in real time and to guide injections with a high level of precision. This technology allows problems involving tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves, and joints to be assessed dynamically — often during the same visit.
What is Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation) to create live images of soft tissues and joints.
Unlike MRI or X-ray, ultrasound allows the physician to:
- Watch structures move
- Compare sides
- Identify small areas of inflammation
- Pinpoint the exact source of pain
- Immediately guide treatment
Because imaging happens at the bedside, decisions can often be made more efficiently.
Diagnostic Ultrasound Examinations
In many cases, ultrasound can help evaluate conditions involving the:
- Shoulder
- Elbow
- Hip
- Knee
- Foot and Ankle
It is particularly useful for tendon injuries, bursitis, fluid collections, and certain ligament problems.
Some conditions still require MRI or other imaging, and Dr. Ohlson will recommend additional studies when necessary.
Ultrasound-Guided Injections
Ultrasound allows Dr. Ohlson to see the needle in real time as medication or biologic treatments are delivered to the target.
This approach may help improve accuracy when treating:
- Inflamed bursae
- Arthritic joints
- Tendon sheath problems
- Small or difficult-to-access structures
Guidance is especially helpful in complex anatomy or when prior treatments have not provided relief.
Why Image Guidance Matters
Placing an injection precisely where it is needed can be important. Ultrasound guidance allows confirmation of location during the procedure rather than relying on surface landmarks alone.
What Patients Appreciate
Patients often value ultrasound because it is:
- Performed in the office
- Comfortable and efficient
- Free of radiation
- Able to provide immediate information
Many examinations and guided procedures can be completed during the same appointment.
Is Ultrasound Right for Your Problem?
Not every condition requires ultrasound, but when it is helpful, having it available at the point of care can streamline treatment.
A consultation with Dr. Ohlson will determine whether ultrasound evaluation or guidance is appropriate for you.
