Not all Shockwave Treatments are the same.

Many devices advertised today use radial pressure wave technology (sometimes called EPAT). These systems can be helpful for certain superficial problems, but the energy spreads out as it enters the body.

Dr. Ohlson uses Focused Shockwave Therapy (FSW), which concentrates energy at a precise depth. This allows treatment of both superficial and deeper musculoskeletal tissues, including tendons and areas near bone.

Focused shockwave has been used in medicine for decades and is supported by a growing body of research in orthopedics and sports medicine.

How It Works

Focused acoustic energy is delivered to the injured area to stimulate a biological response that may help:

  • Activate healing processes
  • Reduce pain
  • Restore function

Conditions Commonly Treated

What To Expect During Treatment

Most treatment plans involve 4–6 sessions, usually spaced about one week apart.

  • Each visit lasts only a few minutes
  • No anesthesia is required
  • Patients typically walk out of the office
  • Normal daily activities can often be resumed quickly
  • Some temporary soreness after treatment is common.

Why Patients Consider Focused Shockwave

Patients often choose this option because it is:

  • Non-invasive
  • Performed in the office
  • Associated with minimal downtime
  • An alternative to more aggressive treatments

For some patients, it may be appropriate to try shockwave therapy before considering surgery.

Insurance Coverage

Many insurance plans do not currently cover shockwave therapy. Our team will review costs and payment options with you before treatment.
