Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is a type of cellular therapy. In contrast to platelet-rich plasma, BMAC contains some of the components found in PRP but also contains powerful proteins as well as stem cells. BMAC is not stem-cell therapy. The merits of stem cells are still somewhat of a mystery. Nonetheless, the use of concentrated bone marrow can be a powerful treatment option for selected patients that have bone, muscle, and joint problems. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue that is found in the center of bones, including your thigh or pelvic bone. Bone marrow is responsible for making the body's white and red blood cells. Bone marrow is harvested in the office from the pelvis. It is a safe procedure with minimal discomfort and is performed using ultrasound guidance. Once obtained, bone marrow is concentrated in a centrifuge. The concentrate contains an abundance of cells and powerful proteins that are then injected into the damaged tissue. Results may be seen as early as a few weeks but can take up to 6 months to plateau.
